What does Interior Designer do?

On a day-to-day basis, an interior designer typically performs the following tasks:

  1. Meeting with clients: Interior designers meet with clients to understand their requirements, preferences, and budget. They discuss the scope of the project, gather information about the client's lifestyle, and take note of any specific needs or wishes.

  2. Conducting site visits: Interior designers visit the site where the design project will take place. This helps them understand the space, take measurements, evaluate the lighting, assess any structural elements, and identify any potential challenges or opportunities.

  3. Developing design concepts: Based on the client's requirements and site analysis, interior designers create design concepts that include layout plans, color schemes, furniture selection, and material choices. They may use digital tools like computer-aided design (CAD) software to create 2D and 3D visualizations of their concepts.

  4. Researching and sourcing materials: Interior designers research and source suitable materials, finishes, furniture, fixtures, and accessories for the project. They may visit showrooms, browse catalogs, and consult with suppliers to find the best options that fit within the client's aesthetic preferences and budget.

  5. Creating detailed drawings and specifications: Interior designers create detailed drawings, plans, and specifications that outline all the necessary information for implementing the design, including electrical layouts, plumbing plans, and construction details. These documents are used by contractors and tradespeople during the execution phase.

  6. Collaborating with contractors and tradespeople: Interior designers work closely with contractors, builders, electricians, plumbers, and other tradespeople involved in the project. They communicate their design intent, review progress, and coordinate efforts to ensure that the project is executed accurately and efficiently.

  7. Project management: Interior designers manage the timeline, budget, and resources required for the project. They oversee the procurement of materials, coordinate deliveries, and ensure that the work is proceeding according to schedule. They also address any issues or changes that arise during the construction or installation phase.

  8. Styling and accessorizing: Once the construction or installation phase is complete, interior designers focus on styling and accessorizing the space. They select and arrange furniture, artwork, lighting, curtains, and decorative items to enhance the overall aesthetic and functionality of the space.

Overall, the day-to-day tasks of an interior designer involve a combination of creative design work, client communication, project coordination, and problem-solving to bring a vision to life and create functional, beautiful spaces.
