What does Barback do?

As a barback, your role is to support bartenders and ensure the smooth operation of the bar. On a day-to-day basis, your tasks may include:

  1. Preparing the bar area: This entails setting up and organizing equipment, such as glassware, napkins, straws, and garnishes, making sure everything is clean and ready for service.

  2. Stocking supplies: Barbacks are responsible for restocking the back bar with liquor bottles, mixers, and ice. You may also need to replenish items like straws, coasters, and cocktail napkins throughout the night.

  3. Cleaning and maintenance: Barbacks play a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness in the bar. This includes wiping down counters, cleaning glassware, and keeping the bar area tidy. You may also need to empty trash bins and clean spills promptly.

  4. Assisting with drink service: Barbacks often help bartenders by pouring draft beer, opening bottles, and mixing basic cocktails. You may also be responsible for delivering drinks to servers or directly to customers. Additionally, you might assist with running food orders if the bar serves food.

  5. Handling kegs: Changing kegs can be an essential part of barback duties, as you'll need to lift and replace heavy beer kegs, ensuring that the bar always has a steady supply.

  6. Organization and inventory: Barbacks often assist with tracking inventory, taking stock of supplies, and informing management when items are low and need to be reordered.

  7. Assisting with closing duties: At the end of the night, barbacks are usually responsible for cleaning and organizing the bar area, replenishing stock, and ensuring all equipment is cleaned and stored properly.

Remember, specific tasks might vary depending on the establishment and its policies. The role of a barback is critical for maintaining a functional and efficient bar environment.
